Philadelphia Seeking #1 Ranking as Green City
The Philadelphia Green Power Challenge is part of a national campaign to encourage communities to use more green power.
On June 20, 2012, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced that the city has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Communities (GPC) program. Philadelphia is the largest city to become a GPC and commit to meeting or exceeding EPA’s green power purchase requirements.
Now the city is looking to its corporate and individual citizens to make Philadelphia the greenest city in terms of renewable kilowatt-hours used. Philadelphia has launched a friendly 10-week, summer-long campaign with the goal of increasing awareness of the benefits of renewable energy and increasing green power use to a level that would surpass that of Washington, DC, which won the nationwide challenge last year.
From now until September 1, when EPA begins tallying green power purchase totals, Mayor Nutter has asked city residents and business leaders to learn about green power and consider buying it to meet their own goals and those of the city.
